Daniel Türk

Postdoctoral researcher

Daniel joined the Space Structures Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher in February 2018. He is working on Caltech’s Space Solar Power Initiative, looking at structural aspects of spacecraft design, including the modeling, design and manufacturing of interfaces for ultra-thin composite structures.

In October 2017, Daniel received his PhD in Mechanical and Process Engineering from ETH Zurich. In the Product Development Group | Zurich (pd|z), he worked on novel approaches combining additive manufacturing technologies and fiber-reinforced polymers to realize integrated lightweight structures.

His teaching activities at ETH Zurich included the organization of a project-based engineering design course for large classes in 2014 and the coaching of interdisciplinary student teams in 2015-16.  In 2016-17, he co-led the Design Technology Lab, an educational platform for industry-driven innovation projects at the intersection of product design and mechanical engineering in collaboration with the University of Arts Zurich. While employed at the pd|z, he conducted several new product development projects with industry, focusing on the complete innovation and design process.

Daniel received his master degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, where he worked on lightweight structures and methods for product development. He also holds a Master in Service Design from Domus Academy, Milan, where he studied Design Thinking and User-Centered Design methods.
